A guide through Istria
I was born and raised in Istria, which, for a reason, is called the “Terra Magica”, the magical land. It’s a land of crystal clear sea, scenic beaches, rich history, especially from the Roman era, picturesque towns, olive oil, truffles, and a great gastronomic scene. I’m taking you to my magic homeland this summer for a 200 Yoga teacher Training intensive. I thought you could use a small introduction to my favourite Istrian gems.
Rovinj
Anyone visiting Istria will know about Rovinj and for a good reason. The absolute star for visitors, Rovinj is not to be missed. Take a stroll through the steep cobbled streets of the old town, walk towards the church of St. Euphemia and enjoy the magnificent view, and when the city rush takes over, find peace and calm on one of the 14 islands in the archipelago. I love stopping by Puntulina for fantastic food and a dreamy setting on the beach cliff.
Cape Kamenjak
The southern tip of Istria is home to the protected nature area - Cape Kamenjak. With many beaches, cliff diving spots, trails, thriving biodiversity, some endemic species and healing herbs, this place is a must for any nature lover. With its popularity rising, late summer becomes a perfect time to enjoy Kamenjak more peacefully. P.S. After long walks and beach fun, find refreshments in the Safari park - don’t miss this gem!
Sveta Foška (St. Foska)
Situated on a lonely meadow, hidden away from the local villages, lies the sanctuary of Saint Fosca. Throughout centuries this church has been known as a spiritual, healing place, and many miraculous stories about this sacred place have passed through generations. Saint Fosca was a young girl from a Roman family who was drawn towards spirituality and Christianity, which was forbidden in Rome at the time. Her family betrayed her, and she is remembered for her sacrifice and bravery.
Oprtalj
One of the most picturesque little towns is situated in north Istria, nested on a hill above the river Mirna, which offers a view of the Istrian peninsula, the Adriatic sea and the mountain Učka. From the entrance to the town, you may mistake it for a cute Tuscany village with a beautiful cypress-lined road. While you are there, stop at Završje, an abandoned village - this truly undiscovered gem!
Motovun
Not to be missed when in Istria, Motovun is one of the prettiest and best-preserved medieval hilltop towns of the Istria region. Despite its astonishing beauty, the real treasure of Motovun is hidden in its forest - the famous Istrian truffle! Make sure to stop by Konoba Fakin for lunch, and visit one of the near-by wineries.
These are my top five, but Istria offers much more. Since our Teacher Training villa is very centrally located, there is so much you can visit within a 30 min drive or less. The beautiful medieval town of Sveti Lovrec (St Lawrence) is another gem only 10 min away from us. Lim Fjord is also close by.
